Dr. Riaan van der Westhuizen, Director & Principal Scientist of Upsilon Consulting
A recognised and accredited radiation protection specialist, with extensive experience in SHEQ. Riaan has been actively leading in the field of naturally occurring radioactive material protection, supported by a proven track record for successfully developing, implementing and maintaining management systems for nearly 30 years.
Riaan has a National Diploma and National Higher Diploma in Nuclear Technology from Pretoria Technikon (now Tshwane University of Technology), a Master Degree in Physics from the University of Witwatersrand and a PhD in Physics from University of Pretoria. He has also completed several short courses in ISO management systems, health and safety management, risk assessment and environmental (radiological) risk assessment. He has significant international experience and currently serves on the Standing Committee of the International Atomic Energy Agency Environet program. He presented and chaired sessions at various international conferences and is a recognised contributor to an International Atomic Energy Safety Report Series document. This international profile allows him access to international specialists with similar expertise and exposure.
His primary areas of focus are radiation safety assessments and determining the legislative impact of the radioactive content of mining and minerals processing residues/concentrates/products in different markets and countries. Within this context, it involves creating, implementing and maintaining radiation protection systems to comply with authorisation conditions and international guidelines, auditing radiation protection systems, radiological product stewardship and basic training and awareness on radiation protection related matters. In addition, Riaan has a proven record of accomplishment in managing SHEQ systems, with a strong focus on data and trend analysis, reviewing effectiveness of integrated SHEQ systems and where appropriate, the development of SHEQ System Tools.
Riaan is married to Martie (also a Director of Upsilon Consulting) and father of two, Shani and Jozh.
